A cruise might be nice, or a cottage by the sea, but what about money? Do you know if you could afford a care home? Have you made a will? Do you know who would care for your family?<\/p>\n<p>If your answers are no, you\u2019re not alone. Apart from having a pension, <a href=\"https:\/\/nsandi-corporate.com\/%20news-research\/news\/no-will-no-way-over-38-million-of-us-in-the-uk-have-not-made-plans-for-later-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research from savings organisation NS&amp;I<\/a> has shown that over half of us have not made any further financial plans.<\/p>\n<p>More than a third haven\u2019t made provision for long-term illness, nursing or care home fees, either for ourselves, or for other family members. Another third have thought about it \u2013 but haven\u2019t put any plans into place.<\/p>\n<p>Even such a basic step as making a will seems to elude most of us, even though almost everyone agrees it\u2019s important.<\/p>\n<p>Many people feel that they are too young to make a will, even those in the 45-64 age bracket.<\/p>\n<p>It seems to be the big steps in life that finally prompt people to take action, notably getting married and having children.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s worth thinking of your family at every stage in life. If you die without making a will, they can be put under enormous strain trying to work out your wishes. They may face higher tax bills too.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t make a will, standard rules known as the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"When a person dies without a valid will they are said to be intestate. The estate is then distributed according to statutory regulations called the Rules of Intestacy\"><em>intestacy rules<\/em><\/span> will apply, and your estate could be divided up in ways you\u2019d never have wanted.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you had been married and separated, but never got divorced, your ex-husband or wife would automatically benefit, even if you had spent many years with a new partner. If you had not married, but lived with a partner, your parents or siblings would inherit, and your partner may get nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Many people assume their possessions will simply pass automatically to their partner or children, or believe their assets are too insignificant to need a formal arrangement\u2019, says Emily Deane TEP from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.step.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STEP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But if you die without making a will, the intestacy rules will be applied, and this may not be what you want,\u2019 she added. \u2018The only certain way to ensure that your partner or relatives inherit in line with your wishes is by making a will.\u2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"s-share-buttons\" class=\"horizontal-w-c-circular s-share-w-c\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https:\/\/advisingfamilies.org\/uk\/information-portal\/planning-ahead\/never-soon-make-will\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Share to Facebook\" class=\"s3-facebook hint--top\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=It\u2019s never too soon to make a will&url=https:\/\/advisingfamilies.org\/uk\/information-portal\/planning-ahead\/never-soon-make-will\/\" target=\"_blank\"  title=\"Share to Twitter\" class=\"s3-twitter hint--top\"><\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last reviewed: May 2026 Read time: two minutes What have you got planned for later life?
