Your home and property may not be distributed according to your wishes, and you risk depriving family members of their inheritance and even their home.<\/p>\n<h2>Possible consequences of not making a will<\/h2>\n<p>Some of the consequences of not preparing a will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your estate may be distributed under the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"When a person dies without a valid will they are said to be intestate. The estate is then distributed according to statutory regulations called the Rules of Intestacy\"><em>intestacy rules<\/em><\/span>, which favour close family<\/li>\n<li>Step children and unmarried partners may be overlooked<\/li>\n<li>Your partner may be left homeless<\/li>\n<li>Your children may be left with no legal <a href=\"https:\/\/advisingfamilies.org\/information-portal\/caring-for-others\/appoint-childs-guardian\/\">guardian<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Your family may face additional distress at a difficult time<\/li>\n<li>Your money may go to the government<\/li>\n<li>Family disputes may arise<\/li>\n<li>Legal action may be required, which can be very expensive<\/li>\n<li>Your family may face a higher bill for <a href=\"https:\/\/advisingfamilies.org\/information-portal\/managing-money\/inheritance-tax-explained\/\">inheritance tax<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The law is regularly changing, and it may not favour your family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your will is an important document, so it\u2019s worth using an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.step.org\/advising-families\/find-a-tep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experienced professional<\/a> to make sure it\u2019s drawn up properly. It will cost a few hundred pounds or so, but you\u2019ll get an estimate first, so there\u2019s no need to worry about fees mounting up.<\/p>\n<p>The greatest advantage of using a professional is the peace of mind it will bring you.
