{"id":1185,"date":"2019-07-11T11:15:35","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T11:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advisingfamilies.org\/?p=1185"},"modified":"2024-01-26T15:33:53","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T15:33:53","slug":"living-with-dementia-top-tips-for-attending-a-professional-advisor-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advisingfamilies.org\/uk\/information-portal\/caring-for-others\/living-with-dementia-top-tips-for-attending-a-professional-advisor-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Living with dementia: top tips for attending a professional advisor meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you or a loved one is living with dementia, and will be attending a meeting with a professional advisor \u2013 whether to write a will, set up a trust or lasting power of attorney, to get advice on your finances, or for any other reason \u2013 there are a number of steps you can take to make sure the meeting works for you.<\/p>\n<p>Below are six top tips to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the advisor have relevant qualifications \u2013 are they members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.step.org\/for-the-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STEP<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/sfe.legal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solicitors for the Elderly<\/a>, and are they a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiafriends.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia Friend<\/a>? Make sure they are legitimate, and appropriately-qualified, before you meet.<\/li>\n<li>Be open about your\/your loved one\u2019s dementia and its effects. Let the advisor know about any side-effects from medication, or if visual aids or similar might be helpful.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure they accommodate your needs: ask for a home visit if this would be more comfortable, and consider whether it would be best in the morning or afternoon.<\/li>\n<li>Ask for a longer meeting than usual, so there is no need to rush. If you are having a \u2018bad day,\u2019 is it possible to reschedule at short notice?<\/li>\n<li>Request your advisor sends a checklist of what you need to bring, and ask for a written record of the meeting.<\/li>\n<li>During your meeting, suggest how the advisor can help, for example, by asking a question in a different way, or by eliminating any distracting background noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good advisor will understand your requirements and put your needs first.
